Libro Credit Union receives gold on (world’s first-ever) social purpose rating system

April 8, 2022

SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO – Libro Credit Union has been recognized with a gold rating in new Corporate Knights’ report that assesses the social purpose practices of Canadian companies.

As a purpose-driven business Libro is committed to using their entire operation, resources, and influence to be a positive force in society and grow prosperity in southwestern Ontario.

In collaboration with the Social Purpose Institute, a one-of-a-kind report was created based on how companies govern, implement, and disclose progress on their purpose. Libro’s gold rating is another demonstration that Libro is ‘walking the purpose talk’ and centering their efforts in using business as a force for good.

The United Way Social Purpose Institute defines a social purpose business as one “whose enduring reason for being is to create a better world.”  This exciting corporate practice has become a swiftly emerging trend in business and while many Canadian companies, both those operating domestically and abroad, have yet to adopt an authentic social purpose, its implementation is on the rise.

“We were pleased to see Libro Credit Union made the cut for inclusion in our latest report: The Social Purpose Transition Pathway. Libro was selected from an initial sample of 197 businesses and is featured in this report as one out of only 34 businesses who have stated a clear societal purpose. While we are at the frontier of social purpose execution, each of these 34 businesses is taking steps to help put society on a sustainable path.” – Toby Heaps, CEO and Co-founder of Corporate Knights

Libro is the only business in this rating exclusively focused within Southwestern Ontario and finds itself in impressive company at the gold level with other social purpose leaders like Maple Leaf Foods and Unilever.

“This is one of those moments where we mark the calendar; it’s significant and another example of Libro leading the way as a Purpose-Driven Business,” says Liz Arkinstall, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Libro. “By no means does this imply our work here is done. While we’re proud to be featured as a social purpose leader, we are always learning and looking for new ways to continue bringing our purpose to life.”
