Farms to Food Banks
March 18, 2014
The Farms to Food Banks program is coming to the Kitchener Waterloo region this year! This program was started in 2007 by United Communities Credit Union staff and directors at a time when need was significantly surpassing supply, and Libro is proud to carry on the legacy of this award winning program. Since its inception, roughly 540,000 pounds of fresh, local food has been donated to area food banks and over $325,000 has been invested.
Working with area farmers, goods are purchased at a fair market price in exchange for assistance in getting items distributed to the food banks. This year, 10,000 pounds of food is being donated to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region. Donations will also be made to Huron Pert, and Windsor-Essex area Food Banks, bringing the total donations for this year to approximately 43,000 pounds.
To help food banks in all of the communities we serve, Libro branches will be collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to local food banks from March 25-April 4. During that time, we’ll also be hosting a challenge on our Facebook page: for every image of food uploaded, we’ll match that donation with a non-perishable food contribution.
